Overall Rating

BPI Rating is based on the availability and coverage of:

  • Product Compliance Information
  • Product Category Resilience Information
  • Product Sustainability Information
  • Company Transparency, Sustainability and Process Information

Each category is given a score according to the availability and coverage of information publicly available.

The elements considered under each criterion are:

Compliance and performance
  • Building Code Compliance Information- Availability of Information of compliance with the Building Code in the product’s information.
  • Compliance Certifications- Compliance certification scheme used by the product.
  • Structural- Availability of structural performance information, tests or certifications in the product's information.
  • Damp and weatherproofing- Availability of damp and weatherproofing performance information, tests or certifications in the product's information.
  • Fire resistance information- Availability of fire resistance information in the product’s information.
  • Energy efficiency- Availability of thermal performance information in the product’s information.
  • Acoustic information- Availability of acoustic information, tests or certifications in the product’s information.
  • Warranty information- Availability of warranty information, tests or certifications in the product’s information.

Assessed between 0(low) to 5(high) through the Insurance Council of Australia's Building Resilience Knowledge Database project for:

  • Flood rating
  • Wind rating
  • Hall rating
  • Bushfire rating

Product Sustainability
  • Recycled Content- Percentage of post- consumer recycled content in the product.
  • Embodied Carbon- Carbon neutral status or contribution to climate change made by the production of the product (expressed as carbon dioxide equivalents CO2e) obtained through the Life Cycle Assessment of the product.
  • Red List Substances Declared- Content of red list or very high concern substances in the product is declared.
  • Availability of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Information- Availability of VOC information of the product. VOCs cause eye, nose and throat irritation, frequent headaches, nausea, and can also damage the liver, kidney and central nervous system.
  • Environmental Information - Relevant environmental product information, excluding product certification.
  • Environmental Certification or Certifications- Environmental certifications the product has which certify it complies with predefined processes or objectives set by the certification service.
  • Contribution to credits or themes in green building rating tools, including Green Star, WELL and the Living Building Challenge.
Company information
  • Corporate Social Responsibility- CSR certification that the company has to help make it socially accountable.
  • Environmental Management- Environmental management system the company follows to manage its environmental responsibilities.
  • Climate Change Action- Scheme followed by the company to reduce its green house gas emissions.
  • Reporting/Transparency- Reporting scheme followed by the company to disclose its environmental and social impacts.
  • Awards won by the company or manufacturer.
  • Quality and Safety certification and systems that the company has or follows.
